The Fisherman Who Learned to Heal
My mother, Iris Caye, never stepped inside a hospital in her 89 years. She was a midwife and a healer in our village in Barbados. People came to her door at all hours. She never turned anyone away. She healed with what grew around her house.
When I was seven, a woman came with a fever so bad her family had given up. My mother made a tea from three plants she grew by the fence. By morning, the fever broke. I never forgot what I saw.
I spent my adult life between Barbados and America — fishing the Caribbean, learning her plants, watching American women arrive on the island in their 50s and 60s, exhausted, over-medicated, looking for what their doctors couldn't give them.
